Point of departure of my work is my interest in space. This interest has become a fascination with the infinite. I am afraid to acknowledge that the infinite exists, because it confronts me with the human limits. Yet the experience of the infinite when achieved in art can be of an immense beauty, what has called sublime. I am interested in pursuing this experience, I want to make it tangible in my art, along with the tensions and contradictions it creates in the beholder. Within myself I find there is a conflict that is rooted in my own perception of the finite. Man needs barriers, borders, frontiers in order to perceive him-/herself; to look at and scrutinize human existence. In the last three years I’ve been making sculptural work and work in space with elements that represent borders, barriers, frontiers, such as walls, and their complement, such as and holes. These element serve to define, separate and protect space, they create a place, and they posses their own space: the physical, 3d space that exists inside a wall or a window for example. Thus, I hope to take the onlooker along on a journey where (s)he can experience the boundaries of that “strange” space that lies between us and the things of this world. |
